Our Approach

Prevention

Most missions were established to bring the gospel message and provide basic needs for the poor in their communities. These needs include food, clothing and shelter. This important work can be referred to as Restoration. A few years ago at Toronto City Mission, in line with our objective to break cycles of poverty, we decided to focus more on Prevention. We work with kids, youth and adults to help them make wise choices as they face difficult decisions about school, friends, relationships, work and their futures. The objective is that each individual would gain self-confidence and maximize the use of their God given gifts. They also are encouraged to demonstrate a changed life by giving those gifts back to their communities in the form of service to their families, friends, neighbours and co-workers.

Presence

Toronto City Mission is innovative in how we approach the process of transformation in the lives of children, families and communities out of poverty.  Instead of expecting those needing assistance to come to the programs of TCM, we have brought our services to them where they live.  Toronto City Mission has placed two community missionaries in each of our four targeted communities within the City of Toronto.  In addition, we have recently added one missionary in the Jane/Finch Community. These missionaries are not only responsible for initiating and developing the programs of TCM, but they serve the communities in which they personally live.  Our community missionaries have become part of the community and hence, develop trusting relationships with the children and families.  It is through these relationships and deepening levels of trust that the cycles of poverty can truly be broken and lives of hope built.

Partners

Toronto City Mission partners with volunteers, interns, donors and churches.  Our goal is to create a critical mass of transformed lives that in turn attract others and enable the community to continue to develop the programs that meet community needs.

Proclamation

Toronto City Mission fully understands that we are not the cause of the transformation that occurs in the lives of many whom we serve, all the credit goes to God!  He is the only one who can change hearts and lives!
