Malvern

Malvern was designated a “Priority Neighbourhood” by the City of Toronto based on the statistics from the 2006 Census.  The neighbourhood has experienced dramatic increases in social problems over the past twenty-plus  years.  Once a pleasant suburb of  Toronto, Malvern has been transformed into an inner-city of  Toronto.  This community lays claim to the highest percentage of visible minorities in the city of the Toronto at 86.6%. It also has the highest percentage of youth (ages 15-24) in the city with the third highest youth unemploment rate.  This combination may contribute to the increase in gang activity in this area in recent years. The strategy in the community of Malvern is to work with children and families to keep the good kids good — away from seeking affirmation and acceptance in the prevalent gang culture.  Toronto City Mission is partnering with Toronto Community Housing; Toronto Parks, Recreation and Forestry; and Malvern Methodist Church in the Malvern Community.
