Steeles-L’Amoreaux

Steeles-L’Amoreaux (formerly known as Bridletowne) is a community in transition. Originally a middle class suburb with very limited cultural diversity, the neighbourhood has become a common first place of residence for newcomers to Canada.  Eighty percent of the community has immigrated to Canada with recent trends in immigration dominated by three large components flowing from Eastern Asia (China, Hong Kong, etc.) – 41%, South Asia (India, Pakistan) 15%, Western Central Asia and the Middle East 7%, Southeast Asia (Philippines) 6% (Source: Census 2006; 211toronto.ca; City of Toronto Copyright 2008 City of Toronto). Many of the people in the community struggle with the challenges of settling in a new country and culture. Acquiring a new language, obtaining meaningful employment, and often transitioning children into a new school system are constant challenges. As time passes, new issues often immerge within families as parents and children can feel tremendously isolated from one another as each group adapts very differently to life in Canada.  Toronto City Mission is partnering with Bridletowne Park Church and Chinese Gospel Church Scarborough in this community.
