E.P.I.C. (Education Provided in Community) Tutoring
In developing relationships with the communities we serve, it has become evident that academic support is truly needed. Many of the parents living in these communities experience language barriers that hinder them from helping their children with homework and understanding concepts. Others have a very basic level of education, some illiterate, and cannot assist their child. Still others lack the motivation to help their children with their school work. However, addressing the academic poverty in the lives of these children is a priority if they are to rise above, break cycles of poverty and undergo transformation.
The tutoring program links qualified volunteers with needy children and families. A community missionary interviews families to assess needs. Our volunteers are thoroughly screened, to provide for the safety of the children and their families as well as to determine the volunteer tutor’s interests and skills. Based on these interviews, Toronto City Mission links a child and a volunteer together and provides adequate training and tools for the volunteer tutor. The result is enhanced learning, identification of needs and a step towards building a community of hope!
K.I.C. (Kids In Community)
The hours between the end of the school day and the time parents get home from work are a period when children are more suseptable to the negative influences of peers and gangs. To fill this great need, Toronto City Mission provides the K.I.C. program to children and families living in these communities. K.I.C. is an after school program designed to keep children (in grades 1-5) off the streets and engaged in positive activities. Activities include games, sports, stories, Bible teachings and crafts. Children also receive homework tutorials to encourage them in their academic study.
