Youth
Junior High Program
Junior High programs take many different forms at Toronto City Mission. Youth programs provide
a positive environment for youth to socialize, build healthy relationships, and enjoy activities such as games, movies, Bible studies and overall fun. Other youth programs focus on smaller groups of youth to develop stronger and deeper levels of trust and relationship.
Senior High Program
The senior high program takes place in the St. Jamestown Community. It is geared for students in gr. 9-12. Upon a short devotion/discussion from one of the leaders, students have the option of playing sports (basketball) in the gym, doing homework, or simply chatting with friends.
Tutoring/Mentorship
In developing relationships with the communities we serve, it has become evident that academic support is truly needed. Many of the parents living in these communities experience language barriers that hinder them from helping their children with homework and understanding concepts. Others have a very basic level of education, some illiterate, and cannot assist their child. Still others lack the motivation to help their children with their school work. However, addressing the academic poverty in the lives of these children is a priority if they are to rise above, break cycles of poverty, and undergo transformation.
The tutoring program links screened, qualified volunteers with needy children and families. The community missionary interviews families to assess needs. Our volunteers are thoroughly screened providing for the safety of the children and their families as well as to determine the volunteer tutor’s interests and skills. Based on these interviews, the Toronto City Mission links a child and a volunteer together, providing adequate training and tools for the volunteer tutor. The result is enhanced learning, identification of needs and a step towards building a community of hope!
B.L.I.N.G.
B.L.IN.G (Bring Love In Girls) is a 3 year program that is for girls in grades 6, 7 and 8. The girls meet once a week to work on different projects using art, drama and writing to express themselves and to learn that we are all daughters of a loving Father. The first year projects give the girls a chance to build self esteem, self awareness and work on building healthy relationships. During the second year the girls learn to work together to create, write and perform a puppet show for younger children. The third year program allows the girls to explore a specific topic, skill or talent and create their own showcase. The end of every month involves some kind of outing to a local community resource or testing their own personal limits (rock climbing) for a time of one on one mentoring or relaxing together as a team.
Teens Leading Communities (TLC)
Our TLC program seeks to train youth in our communities to be leaders who give back. Youth are trained throughout the year as they volunteer in our children’s programs. During March Break and the summer, they are an essential support to our camp. Our hope is that these community youth will learn responsibility, develop their leadership skills, and grow in their journey of faith. TLCs are welcome to return in the following years for additional training and responsibilities as we usher these youth into adulthood.
