Our History
Transforming Families Since 1879
Toronto City Mission is Toronto’s oldest and longest running outreach to people living in poverty.
November 14, 1879 – Toronto City Mission was established by ministers and laymen who recognized the need to reach the neglected and needy parts of the city.
1907 – a home in Bronte, (now part of Oakville) was bought and used for 70 years as a camp for families and children from Toronto to get away together for recreation and spiritual refreshment and growth.
1999 – the Board of Directors and the leadership of Toronto City Mission identified a void in the work of poverty relief and transformation in the City of Toronto. The decision was made to refocus on developing and transforming children, families and communities rather than providing relief assistance.
2009 – the Board of Directors made the strategic decision to sell 608 Spadina Avenue in order to “store up treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:20) and invest in kingdom partnerships. In 2010 Toronto City Mission sold the 608 Spadina Avenue property. The main office is now located at 2610 Birchmount Road.
2012 – TCM adopted a new brand identity designed to capture the organization’s mission to transform families impacted by poverty.
2019 – TCM enters a time of rebuilding and continues to trust in God’s transformational power to build loving relationships to bring hope children and families impacted by poverty in two (2) city of Toronto communities; Flemingdon Park and Kingston-Galloway.
2022 – God opened doors for TCM to serve in the Jesse Ketchum community and is expanding its partnership with Stone Church.
2024 – TCM has opened a new community site in Don Valley Village in partnership with Don Valley Bible Chapel, extending its reach and continuing its mission to serve and uplift the local community.
