A Story from March Break: A Child's Curiosity
Mila Abellera works as an Outreach Worker in the Kingston-Galloway community, alongside Carmen Tan. Toronto City Mission was able to hold Sonshine Day camp during the week of March Break. This was an exciting time for the children as they anticipated a week filled with fun activities and even a field trip. This was an equally exciting time for Outreach Workers as they were able to witness God working in the hearts of the children.
Earlier in the year, the children wondered about God’s holiness and pondered how Jesus could be sinless. The children asked a multitude of questions during bible time which was an encouragement for Mila to see the children pursuing the Truth.
Here is a brief glimpse into the questions the children ask during bible time:
“What happens if I didn’t know I committed a sin?”
“I love God and my mom the same. Is that wrong?”
“I can’t keep all of God’s commands. How can I be clean of sin?”
How do I know if Jesus forgave my sins?” Will I feel it?
“I know there is God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. What’s the trinity?”
“Am I going to heaven? How do I know if I am saved?”
For Mila, one question especially stood out to her. One child said “I don’t understand it. Why would God send His one and only son to die for us and our sins. Why would God do that for us? Why would He sacrifice His son? It doesn’t make sense.” This question made Mila take a pause as she reflected on the truth of his statement. How can we fully understand the love of God? God’s love does not make sense according to worldly standards. We are deserving of facing the punishment for our own sins, yet the depth of God’s love for us is beyond our comprehension.
In an act of grace, love and mercy God sent His one and only son to die on the cross for our sins. Our relationship with God is restored through the blood of Jesus. As we continue to walk with Christ, may we never take God’s love for granted and remember who paid the penalty for our sin to make this relationship possible.
Mila hopes that one day these children may take the step of faith of accepting Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.
