It Runs In the Family
By Jackie Davies (Director of Development)
I am the newest member of the Toronto City Mission (TCM) team, I am ever so grateful to join this amazing organization. When I was discerning whether or not God wanted me to take this job, my father reminded me that our family has a history of involvement with TCM. As a child I remember my grandmother volunteering through our church back in the 1960’s. She would organize the ladies auxiliary to knit, sew and bake for the families living in poverty in downtown Toronto and then my father and I would deliver the packages to 608Spadina Avenue, the historic Toronto City Mission Office.
At TCM, we are still helping the families impacted by poverty but in a different way. Rather than responding to needs through relief efforts, we are being proactive by providing preventative and transformational programs. We run Kids In Community afterschool programs, EPIC tutoring, Sonshine summer and March break camps and “Role Model Moms”(GED preparation) program.
One of my most memorable experiences so far was attending the Role Model Moms Graduation Celebration for these moms. It was a dream come true for many of them to have their parents and children there to witness their accomplishment. It confirmed to me why God has placed me here to continue on with my grandmother’s work in service.
