From Doubt to Trust: How God Led Me to the Right Place
For years, I had a plan to volunteer somewhere in the world for one year after high school. Some people I looked up to, like former leaders of my youth group, had done this, so I always wanted to do the same. My only dream was to go to Africa. I never questioned it because I was so sure it would happen.
But in my final year of high school, when it was time to apply, I started to doubt my plan. I wasn’t sure anymore if this was what I really wanted. The organization I’m with in Canada is Impact Mission, a program of the German organization Liebenzell Mission, which sends missionaries worldwide. Impact Mission is designed for young people who want to serve for one year. I applied later than I had hoped, and by then, all the spots in Africa were taken, leaving only places in the U.S. and Canada. I didn’t feel sure about this at first, but I applied anyway.
I flew to Canada with a goal to grow in faith, develop my character, and make a difference. I didn’t have many expectations but was still excited for the journey. I did wonder, though: would this experience live up to the dreams I had when I was younger? Would I feel needed?
From the first day, things went in ways I hadn’t expected. I was welcomed with open arms, and relationships started to grow quickly. I was surprised at how fast I connected with the staff and the kids. The relationships I built, especially with the kids, became the most important part of my experience. I loved seeing my “besties” every week and growing those bonds was a true joy.
At TCM, I faced some challenges, like getting the kids to trust me and figuring out how to lead Bible lessons. It wasn’t always easy, but it didn’t stop me from feeling like I was making a difference. I could see how God was using me to bring His word closer to the kids, and that was rewarding.
Watching the kids grow has been a blessing, and the relationships I built with them have brought me joy and fulfillment. Through these connections, I was also able to see their growth in behaviour, values, and well-being, which made me realize that this is how God is working in their lives.
Looking back, I can see that God led me exactly where I was meant to be. A year ago, I felt disappointed when things didn’t go according to my plan, but now I realize that God had a better plan for me all along. I’m thankful for this experience and how it has helped me trust God more deeply.
