Names of God

Psalm 9:10

Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.

Devotional

What’s the point of names? Well, it helps you separate yourself from another person. It saves you from being called “Hey you!” or “you with the glasses in the orange T-shirt”. What do other people call you? A brother, a sister, a friend, a nickname they gave you. You get a different name depending on who’s calling you and how well they know you.

What makes names so interesting is they have a meaning. My name (Lincoln) means either a type of sheep or a settler by the lake. Pretty interesting stuff. Sometimes, meanings of names run really deep and you try to live up to that name.

How about for God? God has many different names and each has a different meaning behind it. The cool thing about God’s many names is that it shows you His character and what He’s like through His names. Each of His names show you a truth about Him. That’s how you would do it if you were to get to know a stranger. Same thing goes for God. Do you trust in Him and who He says He is? To get to know God better, a good start would be to know His name.

Let’s check out some of His names:

Adonai - Lord, Master
El Elyon - The Most High God
El Eloheenu - The Lord our God
El Hoseenu - The Lord our Maker
El Olam - The Everlasting God
El Roi - The Strong One who Sees
El Shaddai - The God Who is Sufficient for the Needs of His People
Jehovah Rohi - The Lord our Shepherd
Jehovah Shalom - The Lord our Peace
Jehovah Shammah - The Lord is Present
Jehovah Tsidkenu - The Lord our Righteousness
And there’s more!
